We’re looking out for you!

Just how secure is your self storage facility? We know it is a priority for our clients to have secure storage. In these difficult times, security is on everyone’s mind, or should be. Here at A-Plus Storage Corp, we have employed several state of the art initiatives to provide the best protection possible.
Our Access- Control System:
The keypad access-control system, our perimeter fence, motorized gate, automatic lighting system along with your personalized pass code is our first and foremost security features.
The keypad entry restricts access to the facility after normal business hours but also allows us to grant extended access as needed. In our two-storage facility for example tenants with storage units on the second floor do not have access to interior ground level units and vise versa.
LIGHTING:
Although not always one of the first things to come to mind, lighting can play an important roll in the overall security of a storage facility. At A-Plus Storage, in addition to our exterior lighting we have automatic lighting controls for our indoor storage hallways and stairs. These are motion sensor lights that remain on up to 15 minutes after motion is no longer detected. No light switches to locate in the dark or fear of complete darkness when you are on the stairs.
INTERCOM SYSTEM
Many of our door entry key pads are now equipped with intercoms. Having trouble with the elevator, roll up door, or an emergency? Precious time can be saved by using the intercom that rings the self storage facility office.
INDIVIDUAL DOOR ALARMS
The most expensive piece of security and possibly the most beneficial are the individual door alarm system on every self storage unit at the facility. Individual door alarms will alert the manger of a door being opened with the proper authorization.
CLOSED CIRCUIT TV
Cameras throughout the self storage facility and displayed on a monitor and computers keep us informed as to what’s going on around and throughout our facility even after the office has closed for the day. We are keeping a watchful eye on your storage unit and the facility 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
CYLINDER LOCKS
Pad locks are only as good as the mechanism used to cut through them seamlessly. Our locks , which we supply to every client , for the storage units go through the unit, leaving it flush to the door. These cylinder locks require it to be drilled out if the key is missing. This process is not an easy one, being time consuming and quite loud.
If you are considering storage for your belongings, either standard storage or climate controlled storage, keep security in mind and ask each facility you call or visiting what the security measures they have in place.
If you are shopping for storage in Plymouth, Kingston or Duxbury MA, make your first stop at A-Plus Storage Corp. Go ahead and check out the rest, but store with the best, A-Plus Storage…a grade above the rest!

Can I store this?

Can I store this??? What you should not store in a storage unit.
Self-storage is an exceptional choice for storing the excess of many different types of belongings for your home or business. A storage unit can be the extra garage space or supply closet you don’t have.
When planning what to store in your self storage space, whether for your business or personally, consider that storage facilities have limits on what they will allow you to store on their site. This is for the protection of not just you and your belongings, but the staff of the storage location and other customers and their possessions. You will be asked to sign a lease indicating that you understand and agree to abide by the rules and restrictions for what items are permissible. As a general rule, any item or material that is considered “innately dangerous” will not be allowed. We storage facility owners want to keep our customers and our self store facilities safe!
In preparation for renting a storage unit, make a list of the items you wish to store. Bring this with you and review with the storage facility manager to make sure you’ll be falling in line with what is allowable. Full disclosure of what you will be storing is required.
I frequently get asked about what is acceptable to store. Below is a list of some of the questionable items and if we at A-Plus Storage Corp., allow them to be stored.
Business Supplies & Equipment including Pharmaceutical/Medical Equipment
If you are a sales representative for a pharmaceutical company, you may find a self-storage unit a handy place to manage medical supplies and pharmaceutical samples. It is a useful way to keep your products organized and easily accessible without cluttering up your office or filling your car trunk. While most supplies are acceptable, radioactive equipment , or anything that contains radioactive materials, cannot legally be stored.
Combustible, Flammable, Hazardous or Toxic Materials
Considered “innately dangerous,” these include gasoline, compressed gas, propane tanks, kerosene, lamp and motor oil, acid, grease, corrosives, fertilizer, paint, cleaners, chemicals, narcotics, or hazardous, toxic or biological waste. You also cannot store fireworks, explosives, weapons or ammunition.
Vehicles
Vehicle storage is usually okay, as long as they are registered, insured and operational. As for tires, there may be a limit with how many of them can be stored in your unit due to the costs associated with removing them if the unit becomes abandoned.
Building/Construction Equipment
If you work in construction, it can be convenient, affordable and safer to store your equipment in a local storage facility rather than on-site . However, please check with the self-storage facility before planning to store any construction equipment, as some may be prohibited. You will also need to make sure that the storage area floor is covered if there is a chance that oil or gasoline would leak from the equipment.
Perishable Food and Animal Products
Undamaged, unopened canned foods can be stored in storage units, but perishable food products such as produce or meats are not allowed. These may spoil causing unbearable odor or attract vermin.
OTHER Prohibited Items
Any animals or plants (dead or living) cannot be stored. Nor can any stolen items. People are not allowed to plug in or use refrigerators, freezers, generators, space heaters or live in storage units. And yes, I have been asked this question several times!
If you have any question about the items you wish to store, consult the manager of the self-storage facility before you pack and arrive at the public storage location.

Storage Auctions 101

The more you know about buying self storage units the better you will become at finding good deal and benefiting from those deals. As a self storage facility owner, I would urge you to really know what you are getting yourself into before you buy a storage area. Many people think this is a get rich quick business and become quickly overwhelmed at the amount work that is involved after you have purchased a self storage space at auction.
How do you find out about the storage auctions in your area? Storage facilities in the state of Massachusetts must post their upcoming storage auctions for two weeks prior to the storage auction in the legal section of the local paper. If the storage facility uses an auctioneer you will also find it listed on their website as well. We use Storage Auctions USA (www.storageauctionsusa.com). The auctioneers will travel from one storage center to the next, what they call a “run” to attempt to hold as many auctions as they can in one day. They may start on the Cape and end their day in Weymouth. Once you locate some local self storage auctions, you need to plan your strategy.
When you first arrive at the storage company office, you should speak to the Manager for any guidelines needed to know prior to bidding. The most important of these is the cleaning fee/deposit. Most storage facilities charge as a deposit and refund it to you when the unit is clean and completely empty. This fee can affect you negatively if you are not aware in advance of the auction of what it may cost you. If your budgeted $500 to bring with you to an auction and there just happens to be a $100 cleaning deposit you forgot to ask about then you now only have $400 to bid with. That $100 could be the difference of winning or losing a very good and profitable storage locker. I require all the belongings to be removed prior to the end of the day. That means do not show up in your convertible if you are looking to buy a large self storage unit. Have a truck ready to show up if you buy or rent one to bring with you to the storage auction.
Weather plays a factor in auctions because many times it will determine how many people will attend and if the auction will take place at all. Bad weather will not typically keep a selfstorage unit auction from taking place or end one early if the weather becomes bad during the process. Most public storage facilities don’t really care for the auctions and the work and money it takes to get them together. That makes the urgency of having them greater than canceling for any reason. If the weather is very bad and the auction is held anyway this can be a great time to take advantage of smaller crowds of people due to many not wanting to get out in particularly bad weather.
Once the auction starts, they will open the door and allow you to look in the unit but not enter the storage unit. You should always have a very good flashlight with you at every auction. Flashlights will always be of help in these units because they allow you to see in the dark parts of the storage area where your competition with a weak or no flashlight can’t. This gives you an advantage when bidding because maybe you end up seeing something valuable in a locker that they may not and you can bid a little higher based off of that knowledge. The better flashlights that I have seen are the one with the natural blue light or white light such as those with the newer led bulbs and not the regular bulbs that give off a dull yellow light. Use you light quickly if something catches your eye. Don’t focus your light on something that interests you for more than a second or two because the more attention you show an item the more your competition believes that you see something valuable that they don’t. This confidence you show during bidding will cause them to bid against you with the same confidence.
Lastly, you will need patience and some luck. Most storage areas are not jackpots like the A&E’s popular show “Storage Wars” make it out to be. Most units contain the personal belongings that meant a lot to them but will not be all that profitable to someone else.

Do you need storage? Alternate uses for storage!

Are you moving and storage is in your future?  That is when most people think they will need a storage unit, but there are numerous ways in which a self storage unit may be used.  Listed below are some of the reasons my not so typical clients need storage space.

  1. Affordable Business Storage: A lot of general managers of large chain stores realize quickly how expensive self storage is in their mall locations.  Or better yet how limited the extra storage is.  Mall storage can cost upwards of $250.00/month for a small 10X10 storage area.  A Plus Storage Corp. is the affordable storage option.  Our 10X10 standard units are $119.00/month but you could catch them on a storage special for as low as $90.00/month.
  2. College Student Storage:  Are your college aged children moving home for summer break.  Are all their college dorm room items filling your basement or garage?  A-Plus Storage Corp. has that extra storage space you need.  The best part, we are an affordable storage option.  Have your son/daughter share a unit with their friends to reduce the expense.
  3. Classic Car Storage:  We have big storage units, larger than a one car garage to store your classic car.  All storage unit floors are sealed with a polypropylene material to prevent moisture from coming up from the ground.  This sealant makes our storage spaces perfect for car storage.
  4. Pharmaceutical Representative Sample storage space:  Are you a drug rep that needs temperature controlled space to house your samples and literature?  We offer delivery service to your unit free of charge. Choose a big storage unit or a mini storage unit,  we have the right storage unit for you.
  5. Santa Storage:  Where to hide all those presents from Santa.  A-Plus Storage of course!  Over 9 different storage spaces to choose from, one is bound to be the right storage option for you.  Need it to be an affordable storage space because Santa went a little over budget?  Share your storage area with a friend or two to cut down on the cost.

As you can see there are many different uses for public storage. One thing to remember, check with the rest, but STORE with the best at A-Plus Storage Corp.!

The Self Storage Selection Process

If you are looking for storage on the south shore of Massahusetts, there are many choices and factors to consider. You likely need a space where you can temporarily store important items, such as furnishings, appliances, collectables and other things that you cannot part with or just need out of the way for a while. If it is worth storing, you will want to do some research as to what storage facility is the right one for you. Here are some tips that can help you in selecting the right self storage facility for your needs.
It would be best that you visit the self storage facility before selecting. Why you ask? You will want to make sure that the facility that you are going to put your important things in is secure and well maintained. Even if you are not storing expensive items in your self storage unit, it is still essential that you can depend on the cleanliness and security of the facility.
The next thing that you need to look for is a company that provides consistent customer service and has a good reputation throughout the community. How would you know this? You can check with the Better Business Bureau to see if they have a satisfactory rating. Also, if you meet with or talk with the Manager and staff of the facility more than once you can get a real feel of the type of service they offer. Is the company attentive to your needs? Do they answer your questions? Do they offer suggestions for storing and help you find a unit that meets your needs and your budget? These and other questions will help guide your selection.
Lastly, you should check the price of the company of your choice. Remember that the cheapest in the market is not always the best. The old saying, “You get what you pay for!” definitely applies in the storage industry. What you should look for is VALUE for your money. If the company goes out of its way to serve you and accommodate your needs, then you know that you have found the right self storage facility for your purposes.
We feel we at A-Plus Storage Corp. is the only choice in self storage in the Kingston, Duxbury, Plymouth and Pembroke area. Go ahead and check out the rest, but store with the BEST!!!
